Maybe? I mean not having a time-stamp on the larger menu would make it more likely that people will periodically re-spark discussion on a topic.

If you see a post from the past that has a title similar to an event that happened in the present, it's worthwhile to know how dated the post is, for the sake of not wasting time opening a thread you weren't interested in. Of course there's other reasons, but that's the first that comes to mind for me.
