If you want something really depressing read John Keegan's The First World War. Not sad like some great literary tragedy, but will certainly make you lose your faith in humanity, if that's what you're into.

I'm going to have to add that to my list. I read his The Face of Battle some time ago, and walked away with a lot.

It analyzes and compares Agincourt, Waterloo, and the Somme. Just a really interesting book.
