We always must remember that in the few years leading up to WWI there were several books published about how Europe was far too interconnected financially to have a general war. But it happened. Then WWII happened. There is no reason to think that history couldn't repeat itself, as it always seems wont to do.

Personally, I have a very hard time imagining it. But what you say is true. Look at Chamberlain. He had every access to the current situation, but saw a different path well beyond the point of it being a possibility. When people like the Polish finance minister say something like this, they are reflecting something. It might remain inconsequential, but it is something.
