Couldn't agree more. They do what they do well. However, as a consequence of being as absurd as religious institutions, they also have dig themselves out of a lot of holes (e.g., Karl Rove election meltdown etc.)

I actually think that because they are so absurd they don't have to dig themselves out of so many holes. You don't need to apologize for things when you're always right. A fool needs never apologize.
