It was interesting going down the Ancestry.com road. On the one hand, I've got Belarusian Jews who emigrated juuuuust ahead of the pogroms and seemed to have been absolutely lovely people. On the other hand, my "poor dirt farmer" paternal side was revealed to have become "poor dirt farmers" when the Union freed their plantation slaves in Alabama. I can trace my lineage to this fuckin' thing. "Richest planter in Virginia" to "migrant farm worker" in nine generations.
Doin' pretty good anyway. That's no doubt due to the non-level playing field once certain individuals in Jackson, Alabama became citizens.
It won't be enough? But at least a legitimate government has started the conversation.
