- An unusual gun fired projectile based on an annular ring airfoil configuration was evaluated for several applications. The unique aerodynamic feature of this configuration was its flat trajectory for a relatively low muzzle velocity. The original application considered was the fragmenting Ring Airfoil Grenade (RAG). RAG sizes evaluated ranged from 2 to 6 inches in diameter. Its most successful application was as a non-lethal riot control system known as the Sting RAG/Soft RAG. This presentation describes the various RAG configurations evaluated and the technical challenges overcome with regard to the aerodynamic shaping. launcher designs, bio-physics hazard criteria, unusual materials and operational aspects.
