Wow. How cool!

I wonder what the arguments from the xenophobes against this will be.

im sorry but 54% to me doesnt look like a "clear majority"

that does mean that if congress were to make this a state, 46% of the population would give a huge outcry, and nobody wants that

If you don't think 54% is a clear majority, you must admit it is clearly a majority :)

it is a majority, but shits gonna go down, theres a peaceful way of doing things, and im sure in the future that number will go up, if we make this a state right now... well i dont want to live here anymore because theres enough protests as is

Do you live in Puerto Rico?

monevo  ·  4423 days ago  ·  link  ·

yeah :) but that doesnt make me politically savvy, i was too unsure to vote the last time around, im just learning this stuff (shouldve payed more attention to politics when i was young)

How interesting. When I mentioned xenophobia earlier I was referring specifically to citizens of the existing 50 states. I think it is ridiculous that you, as citizens, should be prevented from having statehood if it is your wish, but only if it is your wish, of course.

What do you think the main driving factor is for those who do not wish it? Is it a fear of losing cultural identify? Economic factors? Some combination?

Also, do you have a recommendation for an English Peurto Rico newspaper? Like, the most respected and most read one online? I'm kind of curios to read local opinion and reporting on the subject....

This is a bit old but what the heck!

it is both, in here there is a lot of pride in contests: boxing matches, beauty contests (miss universe)) and so forth... actually the most watched show is one about celebrity scandals! so that says a lot about this country i think

Spanish will no longer be the official language We will stop being a nation No longer receive benefits without paying our due

there's more, but i stop paying attention after a while

first time i hear of this Newspaper though, good thing because there werent any when i tried to reply to this post last time!

sorry for taking this long, after this long... who cares about PR statehood now?

ecib  ·  4381 days ago  ·  link  ·

Ah, we'll thanks for the reply anyway :) if your favorite tv show is about celebrity scandals, something feels me you'd fit right in. I, for one, still think it would be cool if PR joined the other States.

Will never happen. Their population is high enough that they would get maybe 5 congressional seats and 7 electoral votes, all of which would likely be Democratic. No Republican controlled House will entertain that idea, not in a million years. Maybe if Dems take back the House in 2014, but presidents usually lose seats in the mid terms.

Yeah. I don't see Repubs ever allowing those US citizens statehood if doing so is detrimental to their ability to hold power on any level. I just wonder what rhetorical narrative they will barf up as justification. Something something spending, something something can't afford uptick in use of social services, something something not what founding fathers intended etc.
