- I have covered state failure extensively. I have written on multiple occasions that the signature danger of populist governments is the way they degrade state institutions, leaving countries less able to cope with crises. I am known for my pessimism when it comes to global news events. In my last job my perspective on the news was so consistently a bummer that I was half-jokingly given the title of “senior sadness correspondent.” But when I scribbled those thoughts on the bus four months ago, I did not predict how dangerous inaction would be.
