Sometimes I think the US is becoming a fascist state, and then I come across some old writing that reminds me that the US has always been this way, so even if it sucks, there's really nothing to fear. Here is a very brief excerpt from a short story entitled "The Mold of Yancy", written in 1955 implicitly about the Eisenhower administration (and a brilliant story that I would highly recommend to everyone, especially since it ends--spoiler alert--with the thought the the best way to think subversively is to turn your attention toward the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch, a thought I couldn't agree with more):
- Don't confuse a totalitarian society with a dictatorship...A totalitarian state reaches into every sphere of its citizens' lives, forms their opinions on every subject. The government can be a dictatorship, or or parliament, or an elected president, or a council of priests. That doesn't matter. [emphasis his]

Read that and thought, how strange for PKD to say such a thing, then realized it is you, b_b :) They did not have the technology to enslave mankind before. Now they do.

not to mention "advertising" 'Suggestions' and "mental slavery" aside, one needs to consider the near certain possibility that in days close at hand one will not be able to even purchase water to survive without approval of 'the system'.

I don't disagree, but its important to think about what "approval of the system" means, in a practical sense. My guess is it will look something close to "liking" on Facebook. Preregistering for every purchase is one really good way to always know what everybody is doing at all times. Hyper-surveillance isn't really necessary when you can just check web traffic and credit card swipes.
