I shoulda figured as much when, in the reviews, they hovered over the fact that he calls his grandmother "mawmaw" or whatever like it makes him some part of a backwoods secret society. Just more creepy simultaneous "salt of the earth" fetishization and dismissal.

I second your The Unwinding recommendation.

Yeah, it's meemaw and he uses a whole bunch of colloquialisms that he insists are "hillbilly" that were on Beavis and Butthead, FFS.

Anyone looking for insight will not find it here.

VCland is all about "personal brands". Hillbilly who pulled himself up by his bootstraps and became a conservative intellectual is a pretty good one if it's Peter Thiel and the wingnuts that cluster around him you want to impress.
