I was just in New York the week before last. I was with my girlfriend in a cab as we were coming up to The Dakota. We had the cab driver let us out so we could see the last place he stood. I'm not into ceremony or shrines like she is, but I could not help but imagine, looking at the iron gate, what powerful music he had left in him that we never got to hear. I loved his solo work more than anything he did with the Beatles. He brought a fanatical honesty and introspection to the table in his music, which was itself really good. My gf took my photo outside the gates, and scolded me for smiling in it. A reflex in front of the camera, it was pretty incongruent...

Growing up I was (still am) a huge Beatles/Lennon fan. It was only as an adult that I started to appreciate his solo work more. There is a ton of introspection, you are right about that. Sometimes so much so that it's uncomfortable to hear. But then, art should be uncomfortable at times, especially when "all you want is some truth".
I bet a lot of people make the "smile" mistake :-)
