- A genetic system that contains more bits than the number that were required to initiate its operation might reasonably be considered a new form of life.
It seems like this definition would include a machine that was created by another, less complex, machine. Not sure if that falls under the rubric of a "genetic system", but its plausible, if we define the bits of computer code as the robot's "genes".
