It's a noble effort, but a solution without a problem, IMO. Decentralized applications such as Augur and OpenBazaar are examples of solutions that won't need incentives to allow people to exercise power that resists centralization. The truth of the matter is that our national identities are competing with our identities that don't benefit from geopolitical boundaries. Solving the problems of these new identities is the next technological (and eventually political) frontier.Attracting users is a challenge. We will be adding elements of gaming to make participation more enjoyable, as well as a micro-payment system to reward and incentivize digital co-creation. Because critics may worry about the responsible use of bottom-up systems, Nervousnet will integrate reputation systems, qualification mechanisms and self-governance by community moderators.
The European Court of Justice's ruling on 6 October that countries and companies must comply with European data-protection laws when transferring data outside the European Union demonstrates that a new digital paradigm is overdue. To ensure that no government, company or person with sole control of digital filters can manipulate our decisions, we need information systems that are transparent, trustworthy and user-controlled. Each of us must be able to choose, modify and build our own tools for winnowing information.
I agree, but now the burden falls on us to affirm that this process, of our national (bounded) societal identity undergoing a processual transition towards an online (open) societal identity, is irreversible. In this sense what is important is not ultimately the identity but rather guiding the process of differentiation leading to higher degrees of freedom and expression. The truth of the matter is that our national identities are competing with our identities that don't benefit from geopolitical boundaries.
I think you have a good point - our identity will work itself out (and almost certainly won't be what we imagine now - the concepts of "open" or "online" will change). There was a recent medium article about what the technology needed for this type of transition to an open identity might look like. This kind of tech faces an uphill battle, but... I think we are lucky to have a healthy technological and more recently entrepreneurial community. As this group starts to interact more directly with the socially minded, hopefully we see positive changes pick up the pace. P.S. There is a movie called 8th Wonderland that (I think) discusses some the ideas talked about here. However I say "I think" because I've been unable to find a version with english subs or translation. Would be eternally grateful if anyone could find a version I could understand or if anyone has seen it and could tell me about it..
