From "Childhood Psychosis" and "Refrigerator Moms" to Spectrum Disorder.
The boy that my boyfriend is raising as his son, has Aspergers. He is not liking the switch to Jr. High; which is apparently 5th grade now. His Mom is talking about home schooling him. I am normally really supportive of homeschooling, especially unschooling, but really don’t think it is a good idea in this case. She does not have any education, or special training. She is giving him the option to completely avoiding socialization. It is already hard enough to find a job in this economy. He is going to end up dependent on her for life. She is already, dependent on the suckers she uses. I had people on reddit tell me, that I should make my boyfriend put me before his son. The day I posted it, I saw a child throwing chairs, and hitting her head against the wall at the bus station. His Mom has not worked in 5 years, eventually she will bleed everyone around her dry, and end up homeless. That could be him hitting his head against a wall, if he goes from having stability, and whatever he wants, to living with his Mom. The stepparents forum said, I was stupid for feeling sorry for the kid, enough to put up with his Mom’s games.
Always nice to come across an article about autism that does not regard autism/aspergers as a deficiency or something that needs to be fixed. There are times when I've clicked on autism related links only to find it was pro "Autism Speaks" and felt absolutely rick-rolled.
Honestly - people who are called high-functioning autistic, today, are brilliant people. They're closer to that eccentric scientist/artist than they are to people who need help (it doesn't mean they don't need it, but they can go on somewhat with their lives). I'm not convinced that high-function autism isn't mankind's future, even. We always evolved towards intelligence - and some forms of autism, while poorly adapted to this society, are actually a step towards that. Then again - who, in life, never needed help...
