I know how you feel. Sadly, it's too commonplace to shrug it onto bad upbringing. It's too bad that people get to judge a whole country based on the assholes it produces. It feels like the modern Russian culture is in its infancy yet, without anything to give but a bad attitude and blame-shifting for personal gain. I hope it matures in time, but for now, I just want to not become like those people you describe.

russia banning adoption from American couples

I didn't know that. It's outrageous. "Look, we don't like you, so we're going to not let your familial happiness thrive due to our children whom we have to feed and pay for from the government's own pocket anyway and who yearn for a family of their own from the day they were left"... My brain overheats trying to grasp just how a person can think like that. Granted, we aren't talking about a single person issuing such crappy orders, so - crowdthink? I don't know, but whatever the reason is, this is not how you repair relationships and live in peace with a superpower.

    I used to watch Vremia

While you weren't in Russia, correct? If so, how were you able to do that?

The crappy law --> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dima_Yakovlev_Law It was a huge deal back in the day...

My parents subscribe to russian tv and I still watch certain shows from time to time. The russian version of QI is not so bad :)

The problem is not in the upbringing but the whole mentality propagated by the media. It's a mentality of intolerance and unfortunately most people will not question it any further. I'm not saying Russians are not nice people because I know how friendship is valued and friends will really go above and beyond to help you. But the culture of intolerance is present amongst a huge majority (In my experience like, 80-90% of people) and no matter how good a person you are, I just can't stand to hang around people that think being gay is a disease. These people are not assholes, but they are still wrong :(

    The russian version of QI

Huh? What's that? I'd love to see that, given how good the original was!

...which, sadly, pours over to next generations, who are being brought up in such dark times.

Being a Russian brings forth an interesting culture: most of the time, you're trained not to pay any attention to others (and pretend that they aren't there if something happens), but as soon as you befriend somebody, you ought to help them out. I'm not saying that there is no genuine friendship in Russia, but the sudden shift in behavior can be shocking to foreigners.
