You've probably been enthused by a standard way of formally describing a personality, at some point in your life. If you've found that perfect Enneagram type that speaks to you or you've gone all the way through the first few chapters of Pottermore just to get to the Sorting Hat quiz, you'll recognize what I mean here.
I think there's real value in thinking about this sort of silly nerd horoscope, playful or pseudoscientific, whatever source you like. It's nice to have a quick way to describe yourself, even when the label has no predictive power. It's good to force yourself to think about your strengths and weaknesses, and how you work. Mostly, let's face it, it's just fun to talk about yourself.
So here's a few of my favorite nerd horoscopes.
1. MBTI: *NTP. I'm pretty consistently Intuitive/Thinking, and often have trouble getting along with people who don't reason in similar ways. Superior human class NT!!! I'm usually scored as Perceiving, except I'm kind of a Judging as a hobby (<3 balancing budgets), but then I'm basically fine with deviating from any plan. My standard method of planning a vacation is to really obsessively overplan and then to let myself get lost on the way to every scheduled event. I'm consistently 50/50 on the Extrovert/Introvert scale, so in the end I'm denied the joy of having a paragraph telling me what career I should take.
2. Hogwarts House: Slytherin. I was so sure I was a Ravenclaw (I'm in a PhD program, come on!), but Pottermore sorted me in Slytherin. The more I thought about it, the more sense it made -- I always see your Hogwarts house as making a statement about your primary motivators, and a good chunk of what excites me about machine learning has to do with some primal brainpart that looks at a neat model that works surprisingly well and goes, "Dang, this could really be useful to a hypothetical evil AI mastermind." Then I burn the research. (Just kidding?)
3. Enneagram: The Enthusiast. This is one I only checked out recently. I don't know my Official Evaluated Pseudoscientific Personality Type, but I'm pretty easily The Enthusiast, looking at the descriptions. I get really excited about everything and then never finish projects. Finally, a pseudoscientific personality quiz with a type description that speaks to me!
Well, hubski? What are your favorite nerd horoscopes? MBTI, Hogwarts house, Enneagram, spirit animal, bending powers, "Which Buffy The Vampire Slayer character are you?" Buzzfeed quiz results -- all welcome! Take the chance to talk about yourself, in the terms that speak to you most.
EDIT: Come on, hubski, tell me your label in a nerd horoscope system I haven't heard / thought of! Everyone's giving MBTI, which is fine, but I'm curious about what formal labels you feel describe you well (or really poorly, that's fun too).
According to 16 Personalities I'm a Mediator (INFP-T) and my wife is an Adventurer (ISFP-T), we were both sorted into Hufflepuff.
Basically we are both emotional, creative and friendly, which definitely sounds like typical Hufflepuff to me!
I'm also a multi-modal learner! Vark-Learn gave me the result of 11/11/14/14 so .... yay?
MBTI/KTS-II: Guardian (*S*J), another test got INTJ. Pretty sure anything goes on that front, I probably change from day to day.
House: Gryffindor. Not sure why. Then again, I'm not the most well-versed in the HP universe so I don't even know what it means.
Enneagram: 5w6, the Problem Solver. I guess that's true, but I didn't bother reading all of it to be honest. More of a thought experiment.
And for some reason, however relevant it is, orange is my color - people say it just fits me.
1. I'm an INFJ, whatever that means? I can't remember, I took the test a while ago. The "introverted" bit is definitely true! I love being around people, but after a few hours I just need to crawl into a hole all alone and not see anyone at all.
2. Slytherin!! I also thought I would be Ravenclaw ;). I think it's the ambition. I'm very career-obsessed so I think it makes sense.
3. No clue. I hadn't heard about this test until the other day here on Hubski, but I haven't tried it.
1. I standardly test as ENFP but when you break it down, I'm borderline INFP but I'm indifferent because I know I'm an ambivert (sometimes recharged by people, sometimes recharged by being alone). ENFPs are referred to as "campaigners" or "champion idealists" or "inspirers" which is silly but probably true.
2. Ravenclaw, Pottermore approved. what upppp. blue is my color. Also Slytherin isn't necessarily evil. Just ambitious to a fault.
3. Enneagram type 3 the "achiever"
I love this shit. It's such pseudoscience but sometimes it's nice to read positive things about your "self" and get inspired to follow your dreams and whatnot.

Even though I'm an ambivert by any measure, it's a word I tend to roll my eyes at because it's one of those terms (like "sapiosexual") that can easily describe pretty much anyone. On the other hand, it's way better than me saying "I'm even split Introvert/Extrovert" every time I describe myself in one of these things, so maybe I should cave, huh?
That's true. Sapiosexual makes me roll my eyes too.
ISTP 5w6. Officially sorted into Ravenclaw.
It's also worth noting that you're using MBTI wrong. Typing by letter has been debunked. It's all about the functions now.
Edit: If we're talking about ourselves in our own terms, I'm a pretty stereotypical kuudere (TVtropes warning).
Ah, I didn't even think of Anime Girls Classification! Is there an Anime Girl Type that is equivalent to the standard American romantic comedy heroine? The one who Has It All and is successful or at least smart in a fetishistic way, but is also a Cute Clumsy Girl?
EDIT: Oh, and could you explain the thing about typing by functions? I assume it's something like a probability distribution on each letter, rather than a binary class. Is that the idea?
- Is there an Anime Girl Type that is equivalent to the standard American romantic comedy heroine?
Manic Pixie Dream Girl? Not really anime type, but that's the trope that most earlier rom-coms played off.
- Oh, and could you explain the thing about typing by functions?
MBTI actually has a foundation of 4 different functions, which are oriented either externally or internally. With each type referring to a unique configuration in terms of order (dominance) and orientation. Each type has: Thinking, Feeling, Sensing, and Intuition. Thinking/Feeling are judging functions, and Sensing/Intuition are perceiving functions. And all four are either extroverted or introverted.
For an ISTP, the function stack is: Dominant Introverted Thinking, Auxiliary Extroverted Sensing, Tertiary Introverted Intuition, Inferior Extroverted Feeling.
To type by function would mean to figure out what functions you use, and which are dominant, and then determine which type correlates to that stack.
Each type has one of each and no duplicates, go in an EIEI or IEIE pattern, and are either JPPJ or PJJP. Each function can be abbreviated to a two letter pair. ISTP would be: Ti-Se-Ni-Fe.
Judging functions being how you make decisions, perceiving functions being how you receive and examine information (more or less. It gets a bit more complicated than that).
So if you have TI, you also have Fe. Or Te/Fi. Then you have Se/Ni or Si/Ne. Your judging and perceiving functions are 'linked' so to speak. if one judging function is introverted, the other is extroverted. And same goes for perceiving.
The I/E in your type refers to your first dominant function (for ISTP this is Ti). P/J refers to whether your first most dominant extroverted function is judging or perceiving (for ISTP this is Se - perceiving). S and T both refer to your top two functions, one is your dominant perceiving function and the other is your dominant judging function (for ISTP this is Se and Ti).
With those four letters, you should know your dominant and auxiliary function. And the tertiary and inferior functions can then be deduced. Since we have Ti-Se for ISTP, tertiary is Ni (to pair up with auxiliary Se), and inferior is Fe (to pair up with dominant Ti).
ISTPs, following the functions, have an internal logical model of how to decide and think about things, and take in concrete external information about the world.
But yea, typing by function is what it sounds like, figuring out the functions you use, and then determining what type that is. As opposed to just going "I/E is about whether you are extroverted/introverted". Or going by descriptions of types.
I'm very heavily skewed towards INTJ. It's really hard to empathize with other people and half the time I can't even pretend to care. It's hard to describe to someone else, but that's the most true way of stating it. It's not an "edgy" thing, it's just very draining to try and put on a mask of caring when you don't feel that emotion. That may not be completely related to being an INTJ. Might just be an asshole. I'm working on it, though. Someone mentioned "mindfulness meditation" the other day. Haven't had a chance to be alone, but I figure I'll give it a go. I'm actually surprised that I can sometimes at least pretend that I have social skills. Maybe that is a social skill? For whatever reason, I don't mind telling people about myself as long as they ask. Hopefully you're asking and I'm not being narcissistic. I also value truth quite a bit. I'd rather someone just tell me that I'm being an asshole than hint it or pretend that everything is fine, when they're secretly malcontent, for example.
I can very quickly determine the strengths and weaknesses of something and have a good ability to see both sides of a conflict. This tends to lead me to have weak arguments because I can understand where both parties are coming from. However, I tend to be blunt in real life because I can't write and re-write what I say in order to choose less harsh words (I assure you that I've done this about 10 times by now). Being that I can see both (or many) angles of a problem, I can essentially argue myself into inaction or, more commonly, neutraility. If any side can be right, then how do you choose?
Not a HP person, sorry. Probably Slytherin as well from the little I know about the series.
I'm "The Investigator" apparently. It says I fear the world but that's not true at all. I just have a general distaste for it. I deal with it because the alternative is dying or going insane. Most of the other stuff is somewhat accurate. I do tend to stay quiet, observe, and gather information. Emotions don't play a big part in my life, etc. I'm also a 6 wing? It says that they (we?) tend to be artistically inclined, but I struggle to color in the lines. I suppose that's a very broad statement, as there are near-infinite things that one could consider art. I'm sure that in some way, I'm an artist.
I don't put too much faith in these things, but they are interesting nonetheless. I like to look at them as a basic guide using very broad strokes for different kinds of people. I read up on other types in order to gain information on how to deal with them, but since people are people, there's no one-size-fits-all approach, unfortunately.
