It is a long time since I tried using a Linux system. The moment I found out about OSX, I stopped looking. But I remember enjoying playing around with it and googling until I find some Linux-magician who solved my problem. Nowadays I get the same kick from using LaTeX. Somewhere, somebody has asked your question already, you only had to find it! I am glad you got it to work eventually. At uni we used to have computers running OpenSuse. They always worked fine and were pretty fast. Except when we were dealing with PDFs...
