I haven't been to Mackinac Island, but from what I've seen of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, it has significant untapped recreational potential. The coasts with the Great Lakes are fantastic, and there are so many smaller lakes and forests. All I can figure is it's limited due to the large distances to major cities. I'd love to buy a cabin up there.

It sure is gorgeous. I think you are correct that distance does tend limit travel (especially weekend-oriented) to the UP - almost 7+ hours from Detroit to Marquette. Almost the entire UP, outside of the cities and towns, could be designated a national park.
