I don't know why they are so muscular, but today I was walking down stairs and nearly wiped out (would've fallen/slid down half a flight-ish). All that saved me was my hand on the hand-rail and my reflexive vise-like grip. I was hanging from my arm for a few moments but none of the non-floor-intended parts of me hit the floor! (My knee did not like the sudden bend, tbh, but that is the worst of it.) So I say huzzah for rippled forearms! I would be in a lot more pain without them!
