If I did that, I'd be clicking the "inactivate account" button.
I see an "embed videos" setting, but nothing else relevant to inline images, on my settings page. Weird.

That was the joke. Images are inlined by pasting an image link as the link intself (not wrapped in []() ) that ends with .jpg or .png. (image stolen from random hubski post here)
will display inline while "https://i.imgur.com/EAsU5WW. png"
will not. "https://imgur.com/EAsU5WW"
