It is really interesting that it could have been found long back, without needing modern materials! What other simple optimizations like this could exist for our basic body frame?

I'm not entirely sure that's true; materials science has taken some quantum leaps since the 1920s and carbon fiber is its own groovy thing. Efficiency would be very different if you tried to make this out of, say, bone birch and catgut.

You are right. It wouldn't have been possible before the invention of these light weight materials.

    but was only recently able to cut down its weight down to less than half a kilogram per leg, light enough to provide a net energetic benefit.
