Starfish Prime did help everybody discover the EMP, but the satellites it killed, it killed due to lingering radiation in the Van Allen belts. That's the truly shitty thing about orbit - nothing "goes away" it either burns up in the atmosphere eventually or drifts out into graveyard orbit. Assuming it doesn't hit anything. Which is not a good assumption.
