It won't have any consequences for the redesign, as they won't even be releasing an alpha until next year from the looks of it. I will be keeping my eye on it, however, as it looks like it has potential.
IO is an abbreviation of input/output, so some tech companies started buying the domain names ending with .io. It's now seen as a hip thing to do, and there are a ton of domain names still free, as opposed to the crowded .com domain space.
I haven't looked into it much but I don't know. At this point, it's still too new of a fork to tell. Everyone's really excited about it but that rarely translates into people using it and it being a good and reliable thing.
I mean, look at angular.js. That shit gets talked about more than any other framework yet I don't know one person who has used it and hasn't despised it enough to use it again.
