I was reminded of the way that Jurgis explains working in the meat packing factory in The Jungle. Clearly the work is drastically different but I still believe that the people are both being exploited.
My brief, backbreaking, rage-inducing, low-paying, dildo-packing time inside the online-shipping machine.
I work with someone who works part time in another large warehouse environment. It doesn't sound quite this bad, but there are similarities in the BIGCORP model.
This was a great piece. The hardest job's I've ever done don't compare to the grind of working in these warhouses. Working all you can eat fajita night as a grill cook, cleaver clutched in your right hand for four hours straight seemed bad, but I'd rather do that again then this. Better to not be able to unclench your hand for 24 hours then destroy your back and be told you suck for 10-12 hours a day.
They lost me at the second whine, which occurred about 10 words in. Much like "Nickle and Dimed" I just can't get too exercised. Back before I had marketable skills I: worked in a warehouse, did lawn care, washed dishes, painted, repaired tin roofs (August. North Carolina.), dug ditches, moved file boxes, filed medical records, etc.
I'm more a Scratch Beginnings guy... -XC
