For perspective, Bend, Texas -- way up at the top -- is about 150 miles from San Antonio, or 200 from Uvalde. And incidentally Bend is just around the corner from the wonderful Colorado Bend State Park, which isn't noted but should be.

I've camped at Colorado Bend State Park before, during a spring when there had been plenty of rain. It was like a dreamworld.

Were you a Boy Scout? Terrible organization but I have to say that my encyclopedic knowledge of Texas state parks is all them.

I almost made Eagle, just needed 2 or 3 more merit badges and my project. Then I found out about girls, and got on drumline. So that was that.

Still, I probably logged over 100 nights of camping back in the day, between Cub and Boy Scouts, and family trips. Don't get me wrong, the Boy Scouts have terrible tolerance issues and turn a blind eye to hazing (HAVE YOU EVER BEEN SNIPE HUNTING??), but it was usually pretty good fun, and I learned more than other kids who just played Mario Kart 64 every weekend. Plus there was that one time that three of us snuck out of Freeze-O-Ree in the dead of night to hike 5 miles to the Girl Scout camp down the road, only to find that they don't hold events in mid-January.

Yeah. It's good for stories (especially as my early drug and alcohol days meshed with my late Boy Scout days) and I'm glad of parts of it but I would not under any circumstances ever suggest it for my future children.
