I have yet to be impressed by a Yamazaki, even the $90 a bottle stuff. I fundamentally believe that the Japanese use their tastebuds differently, as the overwhelming majority of their food and beverages leave me cold. To be fair, the article was about whiskeys, not Scotch, which is how they can say 2nd, 3rd and 4th place belong to bourbon (even if #3 is actually rye). But yeah. I used to think the wine guys were nuts; apparently the whiskey guys are even stupider.
