The movie was perfectly timed to make a strong impression upon me as a child. I know that the movie lacked the depth of the book, but Bastion's affect upon Fantastica was something new for me at the time. This wasn't just a kid sent into a fantasy realm like in the Land of the Lost, or the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon, Bastion was pulled into Fantastica by his choices. There was heavier stuff at play there.

I've never actually read the book. Now I am going to.

Ende slammed the movie, but I quite like it. It's beautifully filmed, and it's a really engaging fantasy story. There's plenty in there to make a big impact on kids. I didn't grow up with it, but I'll always remember the Sphinx Gate. Those sphinxes looked great and the scale of the movie would have been stunning on a big screen.

The movie only starts to look like a job half-done when compared to the book. I really hope you get the chance to read it. I get a special thrill from books that are so alive. It's also hard to beat the illustrations that go with every chapter. I didn't discuss the artwork, but I used some favorites to illustrate the article and I hope that gives you a flavor of what it's like. They put a lot of care and ingenuity into that novel that you don't often see nowadays.

Hah, I didn't realize that you were the author. I guess the name makes it pretty obvious... Great piece.

Yeah my name's a bit of a giveaway! But I'm thrilled you liked the article. Do I gather you're the Hubski guru? A friend recommended Hubski to me and I've got to admit I'm enjoying it a lot. Is it your labor of love? Or do you have a team?

That's me. I'm glad to hear you are digging it. If you have any feedback, be sure to send it along. Hubski is definitely still beta. I follow #bugski, so if you tag a post with that, I'll see it.

It is definitely a labor of love. thenewgreen is a co-conspirator. But, I do the coding and such.
