I really like the "Paul" series by Michel Rabagliari because it's set in Montreal, my city. It's nice because it goes back and forth between the Montreal of today and flashbacks from the seventies, when the author was a kid.

Also, I really like Guy Deslisle. His novel "Burma" is pretty good as well as one about Israel and other conflict zones. It's his impressions while traveling and background history that he tries to give as objectivey as possible. It's a nice contrast with his subjective experience of the country.

I'm surprised nobody mentionned "Maus". It's a son's retelling of his father's experience of the holocaust. The format is what makes this story so good. The Jews are represented as mice and the Germans as cats.
