That sounds like "rich kids" not "popular kids". Sometimes there are overlap, but in some high schools the popular kids aren't necessarily rich.

With few exceptions, that to me is certainly a parallel trend. You could be thinking of the popular kids like thugs, or we could just have different trends in our schools who knows.
