Is there supposed to be something sexually explicit about the Wave off Kanagawa? Because I think that's a reach.

Or maybe it's that no western conversation about Japanese art is complete without it.

In my bedroom, I planned to paint a mural of The Wave on the wall next to the bed. I think there's something very energetic about it, although perhaps not strictly sexual. I drew the whole thing out and bought the paint, but then decided to sell the place. Never painted it, because I thought that whoever bought the place probably would be turned off by it. Conceptually, I love The Wave.

No, "Wave" was painted by the same artist who created "The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife." The author is pointing out that, in Japan, shunga is taken seriously.
