Interesting that Spotify doesn't have some sort of "Are you still there?" similar to Pandora. Or maybe it does if you're not premium.

To be fair, they could have asked their fans to stream any album of theirs with the volume muted and it likely would have taken Spotify even longer to discover what was going on.

Yes, but this album was specifically made of 30 second tracks, which is the shortest allowed on the service. This allowed much quicker replays, and in turn more revenue generation, than playing a standard 3-5 minute track off of a genuine album.

I'm guessing the royalties are per track then? I didn't make that (obvious) connection.

Still, if the rules don't explicitly prohibit it, good for them for doing it first.
