It's a rich, enveloping environment. Arthur C Clarke is similar - he doesn't give the first fuck about his characters but he's all about where you are. An Arthur C Clarke novel is like a protracted article in Conde Nast Traveler for a place that doesn't exist. Tolkien, on the other hand, is a protracted article in National Geographic without the pictures.

Reminds me of my reaction to The Space Trilogy.

I made it a quarter of the way through Out of the Silent Planet. I hate the fuck out of CS Lewis; even in 3rd grade I was going "Aslan is Jesus. We get it. Fuckin' let it go, you thumper."

I guess it's your prerogative to hate the fuck out of him, but if you judge him based on Narnia, then ... well, then it becomes very similar to judging Tolkien based on the Hobbit :p

Narnia, Silent Planet and parts of Mere Christianity. Much like my hatred for Brett Eason Ellis, it's well-founded.

Fine, fine. I'd recommend Screwtape Letters, but you probably won't read it.
