- While the fires are mostly in sparsely populated areas, Sydney is blanketed — "you can smell smoke inside buildings" and health authorities are expecting a surge in cases of people with respiratory problems, Cohen added.
Things may get worse.
A shout-out to the Australians of Hubski, hope you all are safe. Are any of you near the fires?
freepenguin, Descartes, Moeman, supasmasha, blackwind, StJohn, zen, istara,
I recall a huge forest fire while I was living in Montana. Although the fires were probably 40+ miles away, the sky was still dark and the sun looked like a blood orange.
That is a terrifying "end of days" type of photo. Glad you are clear of it.
How could I ever forget blackwind? I recall that there was a post asking whether or not people were from Australia and that you were in it. Glad to know you are doing well. Don't be a stranger!
No, I'm about a city away, but I hope that they stop soon. It's devastating.
BlackBird - You're Aussie as well, right? Are you near Sydney?
Yep, sure am. I'm very lucky in that I'm close to the CBD so, unlikely to be affected. I do have friends still further out (West and North West Sydney) where there's a lot of greenery/foliage around - nothing's on their radar yet, but it'd only take another cranially-deprived kid to light a scrub fire for shits and giggles to start it... I was reading about the predicted winds last night causing a potential fire cloud to occur. There was some rain in the city area at least during the night, but a lot of lightning as well. I haven't checked the latest news (It's 9:20am and I just woke up from night shift), but hopefully there's some respite today for those trying to battle it.
