On paper, that's true. But, people's emotions are tied up in how much money they make. Since the people causing the bulk of these problems already have the bulk of the money, of course they feel that the money is "rightfully" theirs because they're "worth it".

Hoarding resources seems to be an extension of the urge to conserve resources gone haywire. I've read a bit about how power changes personalities and has an effect on empathy and since money is largely equated to power these days, it's no surprise that hoarding money is a norm.
