Simply grant the religious people God's existence and the logic kinda makes sense. I understood it as something like this: Eternal suffering is the greatest suffering someone can endure. Since this suffering is so great, you owe a duty to everyone to save them from this suffering. When you sin you are more likely (/will depending on who you talk to) to suffer for eternity. You thus owe a duty to someone to keep them from sinning. Sex with someone of the same gender is a sin. Thus, you owe a duty to everyone to keep them from having sex with someone of the same gender.

Not that I agree with all that, but it makes sense why believers of this are so resistant to the idea of same sex marriage. And other then that I agree, I dont get how this one sin is made out to be the sin that will ruin one's chance of getting into Heaven. Hopefully I'm right, because when I discussed this with my extremely christian friend, he told me I was going to hell. Thanks, friend haha. But I agree with you, shit doesnt make sense to me since

This is great and all, and I'm happy that we are starting to recognize same-sex marriage, but what we really need to do is redefine what constitutes a family.

Good article - thanks for sharing!

A double standard on torture, a near indifference to casualties among non-American civilians, the gross expansion of the surveillance state -- none of these is crucial to the country’s well-being, and in some cases, they undermine it.

I wish the author would reference other articles when making these claims - I would love to read some more papers on this topic.

This is where I get a little sketchy in my info, but I believe a lot of the reasoning for this money = speech stuff comes out of cases involving the NAACP and unions that we're fighting for the rights of the people they represented. These poor people didn't have a big say at the time and a lot of them didn't understand the political process, so most pooled their money together in order to promote a common interest. The first PACs were born, I believe, in order to help these poor workers. And money was seen as speech in order to help them achieve their goal. Obviously corporations and private interests have now taken advantage of this, but at least lawmakers intended to do good. And I mostly agree, money as speech just doesn't work. Actually, a intresting precedent that came out if Velao is that the court, in reasoning why they kept the limitations on personal contributions, said their is a desire to not only limit corruption, but the appearance of corruption even if it does not exist. So I would imagine that the court would scrutinize any campaign finance laws way more since there is this important interest, but it doesn't look like that is/will happen. And sorry if I messed up any of the spelling - I'm on my phone and can't type worth shit haha

When you stop and think about it, what's on offer here is... a continental cruelty of excoriating cosmic - electronica.

Precedent actually started with Buckley v. Valeo when the Supreme Court found some aspects of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 unconstitutional, and ruled that we have a constitutional right to spend money in the political process because money equals speech (although here the court acknowledged that too much money could lead to corruption, so they upheld a limit on individual contributions to a candidate). The court also set the foundations for Citizens United by striking down limits on any interdependent entity to spend money to influence and election. As long as the efforts are not coordinated with a campaign, the speech is constitutionally protected as political and cannot be limited. Btw, Political speech here defined as speech that says "vote for," "dont vote for," "elect," "deny," any call to action. This is different from 'Issue Ads', or ads that say "Obama is a terrible person." I think this last bit is one of the more important issues since these ads are completely outside of the regulations that Citizens United was challenging.

Are you able to transfer your sick days to someone else? If you are at a large company I'd imagine it would be a nice little way to make some extra money if you wanted to sell off some of your sick days.

Yeah I mean I get why each "country" looks the way that it does, but if I were him I would add something else to the equation that would break up some of the areas (counties in this case) that dont belong.

AdSeriatim  ·  3789 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Forget The 50 States, U.S. Is Really 11 Nations, Says Author

Haha what a question. I think I could name 4 or so counties in my state out of 30 or so.

AdSeriatim  ·  3789 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Forget The 50 States, U.S. Is Really 11 Nations, Says Author

When I was studying abroad I was asked all the time what it was like to live in The States, and I always had to explain how different each state was from even its neighboring states. So I pretty much told everyone that what they were really asking was "whats is it like to live in your region," and that I didn't know what it was like to live in California or Texas (I image that its noticeably different). Its really interesting vising a country where everyone is so similar no matter what city you visit. It would be wired not having that city/state rivalry I'm used to.

I thought this was pretty interesting, although Im not sure if I would put the northern Midwest with the upper-east coast. I always thought we were two different groups of people, but I guess Mr. Woodard has more knowledge then I do haha. Also, Wisconsinites and Chicagoans classified as one? What nonsense - they don't even know what cheese is! haha (jokes).

Yay! My first badge haha. But yeah, its a great album. Im glad you like it.

AdSeriatim  ·  3789 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Broken Bells

Yeah I think its awesome knowing who all came together to produce something. Listening to an album after you know how it was made is like listening to that album for the first time - you start to hear all of the subtle influences people had on it. Its a nice way to fall in love with something all over again.

AdSeriatim  ·  3789 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Broken Bells  ·

Well Broken Bells is actually a collaboration between James Mercer and Danger Mouse, so they don't have too much music out other then that one *Broken Bells* album and a EP. But if you like the vocals, then I recommend listening to Flake Music and The Shins. Flake Music pretty much what James Mercer was before he started The Shins, so they sound pretty similar, but I like Flake Music a bit more for some reason. Here is the entire Flake Music album *When You Land Here, It's Time to Return* which is really good. And then my favorite Shins song is Caring is Creepy. On the other hand, if you like the production of Broken Bells, then literally anything Danger Mouse produces is great. People who don't know who Danger Mouse is will be very surprised at how much influence he has had on popular works. But as for a recommendation, I'm not sure what I would suggest since Danger Mouse is kinda all over the place. I guess you could listen to my favorite album he produced which is *Demon Days* by Gorillaz, but that's not entirely him. Just go look at his wiki page and go from there since he has done so much haha.

I know this isn't from the other side, but here is a NYT piece that is cited in his little report. The guy in that video (not sure if you watched it - don't if you haven't) seems like your typical young political snob, but at least he cited a few things.

A female olinguito had been sent to a few different zoos in a breeding program but obviously was not successful at mating.

How the hell do you screw that one up? Haha I'm no zoologist, but if the thing is a completely new species, you'd think there were some sings that something was very wrong. But nice to know that we still have much to discover above the sea :)
