- The last time I thought about taking heroin was yesterday. I had received “an inconvenient truth” from a beautiful woman. It wasn’t about climate change – I’m not that ecologically switched on, she told me she was pregnant and it wasn’t mine.
If you or anybody you know is or has been addicted to drugs or alcohol, I would strongly suggest reading this. Actually, even if that isn't the case, you should read this anyway if only because of how well-written and poignant it is. I have a lot more respect for Russell Brand after having read this short essay of his on addiction.
Drug addiction is obviously a huge problem once the addict starts letting drugs get the best of him. But unfortunately people see this and ask the question, "How do we stop people from doing drugs?" When really the correct question is, "Why do people want to do drugs in the first place?" Schools are terrible offenders in this regard, and none seems to know how to deal with drug users.
Are "Just Say No" programs still a thing? If so, it's just a silly idealized way of dealing with this. Sure it's nice to teach children that they shouldn't do drugs, but there should be a "What if I say yes?" section taught at some point, that deals with where to get help and support in case you do become addicted.
DARE is still very much alive even though the website looks like it was made 20 years ago. Check this puppy out. http://www.dare.com/home/default.asp
