Here is last week's, in case anyone cares. Lotta great music in every thread so far; it's been great fun listening to all of it (and yeah, I try to listen to pretty much every single song or album sent at me).
So! My rec for the week is Matisyahu's album Light. Reggae, some beats, some rock. Fascinating work. The track you have to hear is the anthemic One Day. Moving stuff.
Bonus second rec because I decided one was being lazy: Into the Mystic, a classic Van Morrison hit that most of you have probably heard. I've been on a VM revival kick this week.
EDIT: following #weeklymusicthread is now the most efficient way to notice these threads! Thanks thenewgreen.
I can't get enough of this guy, Ty Segall, lately. The only reason my username is what it is is because of my obsession at the time of creation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86vuviWaJB8 Id recommend listening to that whole album as well as this one. If you're into The White Stripes or bands like Thee Oh Sees and Wavves you should definitely check that out. Also, I've been listening to MM...FOOD by MF DOOM a lot lately as well. If you don't know him already, MF DOOM is a master of laidback aggressive-minded wordplay. EDIT; He's a villain, a master of disguise, an ugly brother with gorgeous flows, and metal fingers made for pushin ill beat buttons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZAXE3-srfM
Nice! Im seeing him a week from this tuesday. Let me know how his set goes?
Ty Segall is so good, and he is a prolific songwriter. I don't understand how he comes out with a lot of new music every few months. Thee Oh Sees are also great, and very similar to Ty Segall (but a bit more out there).
Yea its pretty incredible. I'm not sure if I know of any other musicians as prolific and consistent (as in i dig just about all of his musics) as Ty but now i just feel like a fanboy cuz my username and all haha.
I dig that first track a lot. I have a 2 hour drive tomorrow and would love to listen to him. Which album should I get? Thanks in advance.
Slaughterhouse is my favorite thing that Ty Segall has put out, he put that out as Ty Segall band. goodbyebread might disagree though. So much good music to choose from.

Yes! Cheap Girls, Rosa, and Defiance, Ohio are so good. Especially Defiance, Ohio.
Folk Punk, folk punk, folk punk, FOLK PUNK. I've been on such a binge this week on the following artists: The Front Bottoms: Be on the lookout for these guys, they're really talented and have been gaining in popularity over the past year. They're from New Jersey and are seemingly on tour all the time, I would recommend seeing them.
Kind of Like Spitting: This is a beautiful song, and Kind of Like Spitting is one of the folk punk pioneers from the 1990's. Broke up for a while, but have recently reunited. By which I mean the singer/guitarist decided he wanted this to be a band again.
Joie de Vivre: This is the band that sent me on this binge, I discovered them in high school but recently rediscovered them. They get into shoegazing/lo-fi territory, but their acoustic songs are straight up folk-punk. Other than that, I've been listening to The National a lot lately. I've gained a deeper appreciation for them for some reason. I've been listening to primarily to Boxer, so here's a well known song from that record.
Joie De Vivre rules, one of my all-time favorites. Check out Call it Arson. Awesome folk-punk, these guys rock pretty hard.
You know, I wasn't a big fan of the latest Titus Andronicus album, but I've like everything else by them.
Exactly, not that that's a bad thing. Take a look at The Men's last album, Open Your Heart, they keep the punk aspects of their 1st album but throw in songs like the one I linked to. They pulled it off very well, to the point of being my 2nd favorite album of last year. Titus Andronicus though, the songs just weren't as interesting when they tried to shift sounds.
Let me know what you think of it. The Men are one of my favorite bands, they've got a new album coming out within the next couple of months!
I looked up the Front Bottoms and like them a bit. I might go on a Valentine's date to see them.
This is probably a stupid question, but have you listened to Andrew Jackson Jihad? One of my favorites of the genre!
Oh yes, Andrew Jackson Jihad is great as well. AJJ and The Front Bottoms were the only two folk punk bands I really listened to, but I'm trying to expand that and delve deeper into the genre.
"Timber" is the Kind of Like Spitting song that really did it for me way back when. Weird to hear he/it is back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujWDVzK7xbQ
Vitamin Strings Quartet. They cover all kinds of stuff from classic rock, to modern pop, to hip-hop... but with a string quartet. They have thousands and thousands of songs. The album page on their website has hundreds of albums. It would be impossible to listen to it all, but odds are they've covered some of your favorite songs. Here's one. Actually found this looking for wedding music, my fiancee is going to walk to this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrZsU7x1aFk Also, I got into Kavinsky last week, that was my most recent find. Doesn't have a ton of music out there, but he makes some great electronic music. Has a very 80s feel to everything he does, and it's intentional because one of his album names is "1986". He did the main title track for the movie Drive. I saw movie recently, and thought it was a catchy tune, and discovered him as a result. I love the 80s electronic feel to his music... can't get enough of it. All of his songs revolve around a character that he created, and the character's Ferrari. So the character is a zombie who died in 1986, and all of his songs are about him coming back to life, still dressed as if he was in the 80s, still driving his Ferrari Testarossa, and generally being an 80s badass zombie. Just figured I'd add this, because it kind of explains his videos with the Ferrari, the letter jacket, and the 80s vibe. I've been digging it, but the guy doesn't have enough stuff out! Kavinsky - Protovision: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41_svUt5_e0 Kavinsky - Nightcall (The Drive title track): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV_3Dpw-BRY Lot of his others are good stuff too. Been listening to it at work all morning so far.
Damn right they have, I love stuff like this. Seriously can't get enough of string/instro covers of hits -- a la the Piano Guys. Thanks a ton. Haven't had a chance to listen to Kavinsky yet but I definitely will when I have some time.It would be impossible to listen to it all, but odds are they've covered some of your favorite songs.
Just what i can remember listening to ¬ Kreator - renewal Evildead - annihilation of civilizeation Primus - antipop and the Brown album Rettic - sounds for flying Xmusik - Streets of the new world order The Quantic soul orchestra - various B12 - time tourist Police - various also some of my own music on soundcloud
So I listened to a lot of music that revolved around the theme of Silence -and by the way, thank you again flagamuffin for your help with that. Most of the songs I listened to were pretty obvious like Silence is Golden by the Tremeloes, or the Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, I also added the song Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes because it fit in to the theme of what theadvancedapes was talking about (abstractly) and I know he's a fan of theirs. There was an album recommended to me by bgood79 for the podcast that I didn't end up using but I really enjoyed listening to; Miles Davis, In a Silent Way -the link is to the full album. I was dancing around the kitchen with my daughter to this song recently by Discovery, called "Swing Tree". I love that entire album, lots of fun.
Thank you, it's nice to hear that. akkartik is helping me get the podcasts on iTunes so you can start taking them outside too. Enjoy the tune, it's definitely a sunny skies type of song. I look forward to checking out the tune you posted.
I'm now following #weeklymusicthread, which is how I "community" tagged them. Feel free to run with it and "tag" them this way in the future if you'd like. I think it's an awesome addition to Hubski and I've really been enjoying listening to what others suggest.
The new Frightened Rabbit album Pedestrian Verse is streaming: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2013/jan/28/fright...
Ra Ra Riot - Shadowcasting Just saw them at Webster Hall on Friday. The front man hits the notes live just as well as in the studio. It was a great show.
Just paying it forward. I wouldn't have got into them in such detail if I wasn't invited to their concert. Beautiful voice, great violin, serene lyrics. The orchard is a stand out as far as their discography is concerned.
I've already looked it up and I can't find a recording of it, but it's a trad jazz version of happy together by Dr. Michael White. If you have Spotify this link should open it for you. Here's an increcibly beautiful tune a friend showed me that does have a link:
OJM + KURT ROSENWINKEL - Zhivago
No piece of art has been more influential in the direction of my life than the Legend of Zelda series. It was what got me interested in how to tell a good story.
No art has affected me so deeply in the hardest trials of my life as Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. It gives me hope that one day people will understand I've been trying to keep a moon from falling.
No album has been so comforting and satisfying through this as Theophany's Time's End. It's something truly worth admiring. http://theophany-rmx.bandcamp.com/album/times-end-majoras-ma...
Lijadu Sisters - Life's Gone Down Low - A song I'm in love with. Can't get enough.
Also, hilarious singles battle of the week: Goldie, "Innercity Life" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8u7MNG-ug8) vs. Roni Size, "Brown Paper Bag" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEBoVhx_hDk) Heard each of these in different bars / restaurants this week, kind of like time travel in a way.
http://colleenplays.org/my-favorite-things/favourite-music-2... Rediscovered this list over our morning coffee today. Girlfriend introduced me to Colleen's music years back and we went to go see her at The Wire's Adventures in Modern Music, Chicago 2006. Here's a clip someone recorded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGAmD4rHU64. One of the greatest live performers I've ever seen, and it's just she and her cello, a sampler, some bells, windchimes like you'd hang from your porch. It's super intense and just beautiful music. Colleen's first record, "Everyone Alive Wants Answers", was put together mainly using samples from her record collection. As the contents found at the link above attest, her record collection is just as impressive and far-reaching as her music. She'd apparently struggled quite a bit putting that list together and with good reason, as it's chock full of the building blocks of the most daring and adventurous of modern music. Currently building a playlist full of this stuff - as ever - on Spotify: http://open.spotify.com/user/hissnlissn/playlist/6LPFP7YsQ9V... On an entirely different note, picked up a copy of Pink Floyd's "Obscured by Clouds" at a record shop somewhere in the past two months and it was the first piece of wax to grace the airspace of my re-assembled studio, in the new house. Hearing this now (in order to post a link) on laptop speakers feels like, I don't know, eating a fine aged cheese through a straw. It kind of has to be played through the kind of speakers you'd find in your dad's basement in the 70's, which is exactly what I've got in the studio.
Full album on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15upBREmvgI I've also been teaching myself a bunch of songs on the bass and the latest was "Kawanga" by Los Straitjackets.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IScIQsfO9tA
I have a feeling I would be jealous of your studio setup. This Los Straitjackets song has a cool bassline and a pretty damn good riff in the middle. I like it. I'll check out Colleen's stuff later; have a feeling I need a more peaceful atmosphere than the one I'm presently in.
I've been into this independent hip-hop artist Sol for the past week. Some of it is a bit corny but I still like it. I'm fond of "Paint" and "Stage Dive" in particular. I'm also digging this completely unrelated classic bluegrass track by Flatt & Scruggs. Everybody get out your jugs!
