J.J. Abrams has been a part of some great film and television, such as Cloverfield (controversial, I know), and the first ~3 seasons of Lost. That said, he's very hit or miss and I agree with a lot of what JakobVirgil said. However, I'm a bit more hopeful and that's mostly due to the fact that Michael Arndt is supposedly going to be the screenwriter. This the same guy who worked on writing "Little Miss Sunshine", and "Toy Story 3", among other films. He's also supposed to be a huge Star Wars fan, so I would at least expect better than the prequels.
on J.J. being involved in anything good Lies all lies ;) (or rather I have not liked any of it.) Michael Arndt on the other hand ..... hmmmm
J. J. Abrams is a shit merchant if you look closely at any of his work all he does is promise things that he can not fulfill.
To me watching an Abrams piece is like talking to a mentally ill person whose speech patterns make you think they are clever but at the end it is just salad talk and wasted time. He has a talent for getting folks to think he is saying something or is going to say something but never does. points in evidence every God damn thing he has ever touched. I unironically think he will be perfect for Disney star wars.
Shit attracts shit.
empty promise attracts empty promise. Instead of watching any Star Wars (episodes 4-6 included) just watch Firefly or the 5th element you know things not made by idiots.
But the original Star Wars and prequels don't even compare to things like Firefly or 5th Element in my book. No matter how shitty you think Abrams is, I doubt he could possibly ever be worse than George Lucas at making a Star Wars film. It's not like Lucas set a high bar for Star Wars in the first place, so I don't see how any director could make a worse movie. Hell, Uwe Bole could make a better Star Wars movie...
We are in complete agreement.
J. J. will make a better star wars than George. Don't compare because Firefly and 5th Element are much better (my belief)
or because they are in a different class?
Because they are much better, so "different class" I guess (but only my opinion of course). Firefly was one of the best universes, writing, acting, and character devlopment I've seen in sci-fi in a long time. And 5th Element is my favorite movie because it had such an interesting and unique take on the future that I would say they are in a different class. All my opinion of course. Star Wars has always been summer block-buster popcorn flicks under Lucas, so was only saying that's all I expect from Abrams as well, but that he can at least make that a little better... hopefully.
Abrams will do it better. Gore Verblinksi would have been amazing.
I mean, I'm a big Star Wars fan but... honestly, even with the very best of them (Empire, obviously), does it really 'say' anything? It's not that there's no meaning or anything to the movies but they aren't like other amazing Sci-Fi movies, like Serenity or even the older Star Treks. From the beginning they were just good, entertaining movies. Being sci-fi is pretty incidental to Star Wars as well - it could just as well be medieval fantasy or a western and you'd get a lot of the same value from it. Just like the new Star Trek, it might not be the most meaningful film, but you can't deny that it was entertaining. It was engaging, the characters weren't deep or complex, but they were interesting enough, and the cinematography was awesome (lens flare not withstanding). Also, unrelated but I watched the 5th Element pretty recently and... I really don't get what was special about it. It was entertaining but it just seemed like the message was "war is bad; try love instead" which is fine but a bit too obvious.
I don't watch movies for messages and I don't think a message can redeem a bad movie.
but I see where you are coming from. 5th element is awesome because it was art designed by Mobieus dressed by Jean-Paul gaultier and because of this
I did not notice it had a message or even dialogue.
Oh okay, well I'm glad I'm not dim or something about T5E. The art was kinda cool but that didn't make it a great experience for me overall. But hey, different strokes for different folks.
it is a whole Bandes dessinées thing. It is kinda the illicit film adaptation of the Jodoverse. from l'incal by Alejandro Jodorowsky the guy that made el topo.
A fair amount of my friends were like this all day. Also, the blurb is pretty darn good! I don't know a lot about Star Wars, but I think that JJ Abrams > George Lucas, if nothing else. But then again, so would nearly any living human being.
I'm excited, I liked what J.J. did with the Star Trek franchise, and can't wait for Star Trek Into Darkness this spring. I'm curious to see where he'll take the Star Wars franchise as well. He's not my favorite director out there, but he's made a lot of things that I have enjoyed, and he proved to me he can take a long standing franchise with a die hard fan base, like Star Trek, and make it into something enjoyable. Different, but enjoyable none the less. I don't want someone to emulate Geroge Lucas because he is terrible and the prequels were awful... and on top of that he had to go back and mess with his originals that were fine the way they were! I don't think the SW franchise could get any worse than what's it's creator already did to it. I'm excited.
It will be interesting to see Abram's vision for Star Wars, I wonder how he will make it 'feel' different than his Star Trek films? Or maybe he won't and I'll be sad.
Me too, I just really want something good from the Star Wars franchise, its been so long. Maybe Abrams can do something really spectacular with it and help revitalize it. I just really hope it doesn't become the same basic action flick except with Star Wars stickers on it. I want a reason to be excited about Star Wars. If he did the Thrawn series I would be ecstatic.
Not with Abrams on board... I hope. Apparently I'm the only one of my friends who liked Cloverfield. I've been in love with him ever since.
I wouldn't worry too much about Disney. When you look at the recent Marvel films, they really only put some great talent on the series and didn't mess with it. Honestly, they're a great backer and source of money and talent. It's not all Mickey Mouse. Also I want a Star Wars ride so that's good too.
Is it too much to hope for a re-do of the prequels?
