Week One had an awesome and diverse turnout (thanks hiss, thenewgreen, geneusutwerk, and thefoundation), but not everyone who shared the post actually shared music. Hope that will change this week!
I'll start us off once again. I'm really digging Love This Giant, by David Byrne and St. Vincent. It's jazzy, off-the-wall, and their voices work wonderfully together. Note esp. The Forest Awakes.
EDIT: all of you are amazing as usual. Tons of replies.
Two recommendations for the price of one! For the more R&B/hip hop inclined, I give you Robert Glasper Experiment's Black Radio -- including the weirdest Smells Like Teen Spirit cover you've ever heard. (Don't worry, there's some slightly more generic soul music on the album also.)
Dance Ghost - Helado Negro Chill song that I've had stuck in my head for the last couple weeks.
Yeah. This is good. On a forthcoming album too! Exciting!
I can't remember how I found them, but lately I have been enjoying Fat Freddys Drop. FFD are really chill, smooth and enjoyable to listen to. I reccomend giving them a listen. A few notable tracks are Rain, This Room, and Wandering EyeFat Freddy’s Drop is a New Zealand seven-piece band from Wellington, whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno.
Finally checked out Captain Murphy this week. Been hearing a bunch about it lately. It is Flying Lotus' alter ego. It's different from his other work in that there are a bunch of cameos, guest spots, cartoon samples, interludes, and hip hop style beats. Madlib and Earl Sweatshirt make appearances. Good stuff. https://soundcloud.com/selftitledmag/captain-murphy-mighty-m... Stream the whole thing Duality here. Fun intro.... Also, for those unfamiliar with Fly Lo. His last album Until the quiet comes. on Warp Records was in my top ten. Stream a sample yo....
Was it still playing when you woke up? That's the best. Some of my most surreal life experiences has been waking up in the middle of the night with the album I was listening to still playing in the background and feeling like I was being completely engulfed in the world of the sound. Like being suffocated. Sometimes it can be scary, depending on what music is on.
Xanthochroid - Blessed He With Boils: epic, Opethian black metal from California. This is their debut album, which continues the concepts explored in their previously released EP. The Odious - Joint Ventures: I knew this album was coming for a while, but I only got around to listening to it yesterday. BTBAM meet The Faceless, some would say. Kind of disappointed by the production on this one, but it's awesome nonetheless. Reso - Tangram: atmospheric dubstep. I know the 'dubstep' label might put some people off, but it's their loss, really. Unfortunately I couldn't find a full album stream, so linked here is the album opener. Tatran: Israeli jazz group, pretty chill. This is a recorded song, they have a ton of live videos on their YouTube channel.
I dutifully gave these a listen, even though I can say with certainty that black metal isn't my thing. What I have learned is that atmospheric dubstep isn't really dubstep? Sort of. Anyway, I enjoyed the third link quite a lot. Thanks for sharing!
Eyedea - White rapper from '93-'10. Died in 2010 from accidental drug overdose. He is amazingly talented, and his lyrics come from his life. His most popular song, Smile is easily consumable, Paradise is a personal favorite (from his glory days). Some awesome rapping in One Twenty. Found his music recently and been listening to it a lot.
Well this week I haven't heard too much new music, but I have listened to one really good one. Armin Van Buuren's "State of trance 2012 year mix" mixing many different tracks together into one two hour long song. I listened to all 2 hours of it yesterday while surfing hubski. Can be used as dramatic background music if played low, or party music if you want to as well. http://thissongissick.com/blog/
scroll down. anywhere else I think you'd have to download it
Yesterday sounds_sound posted a song by Deerhoof. I've not listened to them in a long time. Their name and the time in which I first heard them reminded me of the band Reindeer Section, so I posted this song that I listened to a LOT when I first met my wife. -Tons of nostalgia. Enjoy
Oh, I was just listening to Deerhoof vs. Evil yesterday. It's amazing that they've still got new sounds.
Deerhoof fell off my radar for a few years there. I've seen them three times in concert and have really enjoyed following the arc of their changing sound. Their new album, The Breakup Song, is a bit more challenging than their last few, but it's them in spades. If anyone here needs an album to get their feet wet with, I'd try The Runners Four. Or better yet, just watch their drummer Greg Saunier play Milk Man live. Dude is mad talented.
I watched that video, he is a madman. I recall being introduced to Reindeer Section by Jo and then telling you about how she turned me on to this great band and you were like, "yeah dude, I love that band, their one of my favorites". -You remember that? Thwarted my effort to introduce you to something.
Don't feel bad pal. My Beatles knowledge has increased ten fold because of you. I think you introduced me to The Last Waltz too. So there's that, and it ain't nothing for damn sure :)
Got into The Blasters a bit thanks to a belated listen to Dave Alvin's appearance on the WTF podcast. Didn't know they pre-date Los Lobos and similar "Americana by way of LA" bands by a few years. Don't know if I can recommend their whole catalogue based on a few cursory listens but, as noted on the podcast, "Marie Marie" is a jam and well worth the two minutes it takes to hit your eardrums.
"Marie Marie" by The Blasters on Spotify Hosted a comedy show tonight and a band called The Funk Crusaders capped it off with some exceptionally tight soul, funk, and r&b covers. The drummer is from a local "speed-pop"/"space-surf" group called Merlin Wall and apparently he's been playing with this band for a lot longer, since back in high school. BLOB_CASTLE was especially fascinated by the band's use of two guitarists as opposed to the more traditional addition of an organ or keyboard player in similar setups, and I think it served them well. Check out the link for a cover of "Tighten Up" (!) amongst others, although admittedly this might translate better in a live setting with the full force of a stage PA as opposed to weakly pumped out the speakers of an idevice or similar.
The Funk Crusaders on Bandcamp
Yeah I thought it a little strange that they had two guitarists playing almost the exact same thing. The benefits to that though are that there's a fuller sound, especially if they have differing tones.
I haven't a clue what space-surf purports to be, but I think I'll make myself acquainted. EDIT: and I would have pegged The Blasters as being about ten years older than they actually are. (The riff right at the finish is reminiscent of The Byrds, among other things.)
The whole album of The Naked and Famous titled Passive Me Aggressive You. One of my favorites on the record ; Girls Like You
I love Handshake by Two Door Cinema Club, the guitar hook so well done, the lyrics are actually meaningful and the music its self is pretty unique. I've never really been a big fan of indie bands I've considered them 'hipster'(Nothing wrong with that anymore...), but once I listened to Two Door Cinema Club I fell deep, deep, deep, in love.
That's a solid band. Good choice, although I have difficulty believing that you found it this week, haha. I think I'll have to change the thrust of this thread series to adapt to the fact that people are just sharing songs they like. Which is awesome as well, of course.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ku7dT72P9M WOW LIL B THE BASED GOD RAWEST RAPPER ALIVE NEW RARE TRACK IF YOU REALLY LOVE LIL B AND CRIED TO THIS OR REALLY HAVE BEEN EFFECTED BY THIS VIDEO HIT LIL B UP!
I AGREE THIS WAS A VERY #RARE AND #BASED TRACK. MY LIFE WAS IN SHAMBLES BUT LISTENING TO LIL B MADE ME REMEMBER HOW TO SMILE AND BE HAPPY. I LOVE YOU LIL B.
Nice, I like the idea of a weekly thread. Yahtzel - Girls EP is kind of chill electro I suppose. Don't hold me to that definition, I don't know what the hell I'm talking about. It's rather nice, at any rate.
Shades of Grey by Mckaya McCraven. There are no links for it anyone, sorry. Just buy the albums Split Decisions, the whole thing is incredible. Edit: I made a youtube video of it, so we're all good.
Here's some T Bone Burnett for you! With the Punch Brothers! I'm a folkie, that's fo sho!
Texas claimed T-Bone Burnett a long time ago! Also, I just learned a dozen things from his Wikipedia page in the time it took for that song to play. Had no clue he was so active in film, songwriting and working on some extremely famous soundtracks. I've always been really interested in guys like T-Bone, Townes Van Zandt, Willie, of course, Blaze Foley ... the outlaw country guys. Never could get the hang of modern country music, but the old stuff strikes a chord.
Been listening a lot to Guante and Big Cats brand new album You Better Weaponize. It is some underground rap from Minneapolis, and Guante is quite the political activist so it has a fair amount of political overtones to it. My favorite tracks from it: Underground Sex Party and Other
