The problem with Tumblr is the same problem with 'communities' such as 4chan and 8chan and twitter etc. Tumblr contained a culture of weird people into their own little world of weird. I'm not a tumblr person; the only interaction I have with tumblr is when I see a gif with the logo in the corner, or someone would come into an astronomy forum to post an astroimage... only for everything else in their blog to be porn and fan service. Looking into some of the news, it turns out there was a massive kiddy-porn issue in the bowels of the site , a problem big enough for Apple to kick them off the App Store. Link Sex workers that were booted off Craigslist and Backpage drifted to Tumblr over the last few years as well which made the site a target for the right-wing anti-sex people who went and did mass reportings of stuff that, if we are honest, should probably be scrubbed off the internet anyway. link More news is popping up about the child porn connection, but it may just be the media hive mind chasing clicks. Link The DC article says it creeped in over the last two weeks, but there are reports from reddit posts going back a few years that there was no easy way to report illegal content on the site, along with people noting that the images would be taken down but the users who liked the images were allowed to stay on the platform.
In all my years on 4chan I do not think I've seen kiddie porn once. 14 year olds seeking attention in underwear that were immediately reported, sure. If the allegations are correct that child porn was all over the site and the operators did nothing to combat it, fuck those guys.
I'm not concerned over Hubski, as this site is rather troll resistant. But if you are in an online space allowing user content I'd start preparing for a shitstorm as all the porn people from tumblr migrate out and seek a new web community.
