...you know?

The fucking judgmental nature of the open source community? It isn't doing anybody any favors. You think I wanted to invite Windows back into my life? You think I chose to put up with all the locked-out Apple bullshit? Do you think most of us are walking around in Apple jackets or Microsoft hats? Do you have any evidence that we give the first fuck about the operating system beyond the shit we can run on it?

'cuz lemme tell ya - I'd be linux fuckin' everywhere if the software that ran on it wasn't abject janky toy shit. Fact of the matter is, some of us need audio editors better than Audacity, picture editors better than Gimp, word processors and spreadsheets better than Open Office or some combination of all of the above and fuckin'A, my friend, I know you guys are loyal to a fault over your Fisher Price My First Image Editor but some of us work for a living.

I've got plugins that cost a thousand dollars. They run in applications that cost four. Would I run them on Linux? yer damn skippy I would. But that's not an option. And it never will be so long as the open source community keeps insisting that just because your needs are served by Linux Mint mine will be.

I've got linux. The way I keep my (evil empire) Windows DAW from catching the sniffles every time i have to download something is I've got a Mint VM that it touches the world with. you know what? Even fucking Thunderbird is a piece of shit on Linux. Wish it weren't. Wish I could blow that window away and live out my computing life in beautiful open-source bliss. But I can't 'cuz I got bills to pay.

I've got a $1200 server chip sitting in a server chassis with like 2 M.2 drives and a thousand dollar sound card and like five drives and a $500 video card and the most expensive thing on my desktop?

there's a good $30k worth of licenses on that little fucker and it won't even show up in Linux. To Linux, that's not a key, it's a particularly retarded low-storage USB mass storage device.

So while I admire the passion? And I know you come from a place of civil rights or Maker Manifesto or whatever, kindly leave the slavery imagery out of it because for those of us who actually have to get shit done? Your choices are not available to us.

Edit: nvm, ignore all of this, I know it's the plugins that won't run through Linux, especially with licensing verification as ridiculous as it is now. I have myself to thank for that, I guess.

This was a purple link from my Google search. I have no recollection of it. Get wrecked, memory.

Too much latency from the OS port? Wine is generally shitty to work with, from my experiences. I had more luck cracking Ableton 8, but that was like 5 years ago.

IE, how to force OS X software to run on a different operating system via virtual machine.

This is someone who really likes Linux, realized there's nothing creative that can be done on it, and managed to get the heifer to wear high heel shoes.

I'm also a working professional. But the computers that interfaced with anything going into space were Linux, and for good reason, not a single non-custom program ever got use on those machines. I miss those days.

If you're writing software, there is no environment now nor or in the future that will compare to Linux and the BSDs, because they were written by guys like you for guys like you.

If you're a syadmin there's no environment now nor in the future that will compare to Linux and the BSDs, because they were written by guys like you for guys like you.

If you're a scientist writing software, there' is no envornment now nor in the future that will compare to Linux and the BSDs, because they care at least in principal about guys like you and everyone else cares about marketshare.

For the time being, artist still count as "marketshare". Give it a few years before Apple stops caring about users who produce anything at all and watch Photoshop get ported to Linux, Pantone relax its licensing enough that Gimp doesn't have to lag behind and kleinbl00 mellowing a bit as less artificial stress filters down to him.

From your lips to Adobe's ears.

I've been saying for a year now that the most expedient solution for all players is for Adobe to buy Avid, throw away Audition and PT First, and make Pro Tools, AfterFX and Symphony interoperable as part of CC for Linux.

That you can't do rendering on a Beowulf cluster is one of the biggest missteps in creative post.

Adobe swears up and down the only reason they don't do Linux ports is that none of us buy software. Meanwhile Maya and Houdini have had Linux ports for years.

kleinbl00  ·  2560 days ago  ·  link  ·

None of us buy the other operating systems either, though. Mac and Win have both been free upgrades for what? 4 years now?

Fourth gen proprietary language, mostly, here. Sad. Can you guess which one? Wrote a bitchin' 4chan [edit: that fuckup deserves to stay and haunt me forever] simulation last year right about now, implicit none'd it! Used Fortran 95, but I've debugged some 77 code before, NEVER AGAIN.

Yeah, I just gotta get in, get out, and get on with my life right now. There's no time to optimize workflow, this is grad school, the aim is that the exact opposite thing happens. And April? April is Fuck am_Unition Especially Hard Month, and it ain't the good fuckin' type of fucking. I'm halfway on Hubski to vent; I know this consciously. Sorry, Hubski/bfv. Thanks for listening to me bitching, my girlfriend appreciates it tomorrow.

I dunno what my cybers will look like in a few years. I'm on a 2012 Macbook Pro. I just updated iOS for the first time in two years last week, as the boot process had grown longer than two hours.

Writing code has been very rewarding for me. I enjoy it, naturally.

IDL or Matlab?

am_Unition  ·  2560 days ago  ·  link  ·

Mostly IDL, who cares, the syntax differences are minor squabbles. Both are child's play, for people working in C or what have you. Which is appropriate, as I am a child.

What do you write in, I've gleaned you're netsec? Black-hat, for sure, colluding around these parts...

I'd be interested to hear what you think of Ardour. These guys ship it with some of their devices, and while I'm not even sure what half the products on their site are for their wikipedia page does not make them sound like toys.

We've discussed this before. Harrison made supadope consoles back when people gave a shit about supadope consoles which means effectively that their business model died circa 1996. Harrison would love for you to give a shit about Mixbus but you don't, I don't, nobody does because we've all got plugins that we all use and they all work in Mac and probably Windows. If you make iToys you write your plugins as AudioUnits. If you want the punk pikers you write VSTs. If you want it to be used by people who can actually afford to pay you you're writing .aax and it's working in Pro Tools.

And yes - there are plenty of people whose GarageBand stuff has ended up on iTunes and isn't that nice. That you can make successful art despite your shitty tools is a testament to your perseverance and I applaud you all. But those of us who do it a lot? We'd like it to not be a pain in the ass.

    All the buzzwords

Mute, solo, fader, automate, EQ, dynamics, insert, send, pre-fader, post-fader, sync, monitor, isolate.

I'm sorry, those aren't buzzwords. A $29 Rolls mixer from Guitar Center has mute, solo and "faders." And sure: Les Paul mixed Abbey Road on a four-fader Planar made out of used humbuckers and Sir George Martin's earwax at Electric Ladyland back when it was a canvas tent in Nigeria but fuckin'A stop holding up a stone axe and insist that it's a fuckin' Sawzall because if I smash it against the tree enough it'll fall over.
