Last year we were in Istanbul, and there are feral dogs all over the city. Cats too. The dogs look pretty well taken care of in Istanbul, however. One night as we walked back to our hotel, we were basically walking with a pack of several dogs. No one seemed to mind them. One of these days after work I am going to have to take a driva about, take some interesting pictures of Detroit, and post them. BTW, the print version reads easier: http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/city-of-strays-detr...
I wanted to go outside the gates and discover the real Dominican. I talked my new wife in to taking an adventurous stroll outside our barriers. We only got about 20 paces before there was a rotting dog corpse on the sidewalk and two strays lingering over it. The stray dogs were so thin their ribs were bulging out their sides and they just looked miserable. My wife started crying immediately. It took a while to console her, she is a huge animal lover. We never left the gates again. I ate a lot of Pizza Hut that week.
