galen  ·  3463 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: I've finally made a video of our hitchhiking this summer.

Awesome! I've always thought hitchhiking was wonderfully romantic (especially now that I'm reading Kerouac's On the Road, but I'll probably never do it just because of the danger (perceived or real). What was it like for you guys?

Also: shit, how fast were you going at the end? That's 170+ km/hr, right?

Yeah the driver was going pretty fast. It's not really legal (I don't remember but i think the speed limit was around 130km/h) but it's this new "autobahn" style toll road they constructed in Croatia recently. It was also an empty road (cause nobody wants to pay the toll?) so honestly I think it was pretty safe.

We were not planning to hitchhike which is why we have a backpack on heels instead of a regular backpack. We decided to give it a try because we couchsurfed a bunch before and all our hosts kept telling us how amazing hitchhiking is. So we decided to give it a go in Romania and take buses if it didn't work out. We have a pretty crazy/awesome first day :

So we decided to keep doing that :)

We definitely had a couple long waits and unpleasant moments but the good outweighs the bad 10000% And I think most of Europe is pretty safe and easy to hitchhike. Definitely would do again.

Awesome! I may hitchhike after all, just not in the US... Who knows what fun lurks in the future?

elizabeth  ·  3463 days ago  ·  link  ·

Yeah, while it's definitely possible I don't think i'd hitchhike in the US/Canada either. Not for safety reasons but cause the distances here are so damn big. Better get an old car and go on a road trip.

You think you've seen damn big distances? Come to Texas, my friend. We'll show ya big.

Exactly my point. Europe is easier cause the distances are small but here in North America i would not hitchhike cause the distances are huge.

Dude, read Dharma Bums.

And then read Big Sur and weep along with Kerouac as he hitchhikes for the last time because the culture has died in America.

I need to try and reread Kerouac because the first time I tried I was not having what he was putting down.

Fuck flags I'm not looking for more books to add to my list

Right now I'm just burning thru all the great lit at my local library. Once I'm done with that and at least partway into my wishlist I'll look into some more Kerouac.
