There are a lot of songs that can bring a tear to my eye, for a lot of different. The one song that absolutely crushed me the first time I heard it though was Atmosphere - Yesterday. It still gets my emotions going every time. I love every song that you guys have picked so far!
I just listened to that song for the first time. And as wandering said, it's absolutely masterful lyricism. That said, I didn't even come close to shedding a tear. Not even close. I know the emotions and feelings he's talking about, but I've made my peace. And I'm not all that close to anyone anymore. Growing up, I lived around a lot of military families, and so most of my friends ended up moving away after a couple years of knowing them. Hurt every time. And over time I've clammed up. I imagine it's going to take a very special person to be able to make me give a damn about them. And I guarantee I'll cry my ass off if they leave. But other than that, I imagine that no matter who it is that leaves, I won't feel a damn thing. To this day there's really only one or two people who I really miss and want to get in contact with (but can't). Great song though. I really enjoy songs like that (lyrical raps with more emphasis on story than bitches/hoes).
The first time I heard that song was when I was driving in a car with my best friend after I had just found out my grandmother had dementia. The way he leads the listener to believe the song is about one thing when it is really about another...I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't heard it, but it is masterful lyricism.
At first I was going to say no. But then I was going about my day and was reminded of this. I heard a snippet in a different game (I was on the topic of RO and someone brought up another game that was pretty close made by the same peeps). I insta-teared. I'm listening to it right now, and I'm about to cry. So many memories with that game. Made up my childhood summers.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nEM4VlnGNXU A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke. It gives me the chills every time I hear it. It is a song that intertwines hope and hopelessness so perfectly; when you couple it with the tragedy of his death immediately before the songs release, it really is just a crushingly emotional song.
I didn't realize that he died prior to it's release. That must have been one hell of a release for his fans at the time. Wow. Good choice, it's a wonderful song.
I can't say a song has ever made me cry, or even close to it. However, whenever I listen to The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die's Getting Sodas, it does have an emotional impact on me. The line "And when our voices fail us we will find new ways to sing. When our bodies fail we'll find joy in the peace that it brings" is particularly affecting because the band's singer lost his ability to sing shortly before the band recorded this song. So his bandmates have to sing for him on a song he had a hand in writing. The first time I heard those lines it hit me like a ton of bricks.
Many songs will make my eyes start to leak, if I allow myself to fall into them (there should be a word for that; maybe there is). This is one : Wilco - Jesus etc
What a great song Brian, one of my favorites. I once saw Wilco perform it live with Andrew Bird on the violin, that was a really cool moment.
