A great little animated story about why J.J. Cale never became a superstar, even though some of his songs did. cgod - you might like this. I know you're a fan.
There is a cluster of artist that I associate with each other one of whom is J.J. Cale. They don't share a style I guess they share a time period but mostly they share talent without the massive fame they had the potential to realize. Two examples.
Yeah, I agree. -- a song for you (2'07")about a year ago, Elton came and found me in a ditch by the side of the highway of life and he took me up to the high stages with big audiences and treated me like a king: 1'05"
- Leon Russell, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, 2011.
It's a good version of "a song fro you." "Magic Mirror" is another Russell song that is some kind of touch stone in my life. Like Paul Simon's "One Man's Ceiling Is Another Mans Floor" it always reminds me to keep some perspective. I think Simon's "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" is one of the most American albums ever made. I love Russell, Simon and Cale for making and expressing the beauty of America without jingoism, I forget how to do that all to often.
When I first met my father in law (not yet my father in law) he and I immediately connected over classic rock. He mentioned the groups he loved, Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd (he's southern). The one person he liked the most though was JJ Cale. He gave me some JJ Cales CD's and I really enjoyed them. His music is/was great and will forever remind me of meeting my father in law for the first time.
