T-Dog, fuffle, jonaswildman, ecib, bgood79, mrjasonetaylor,
I have recorded some percussion and drums for this song. I'm not a drummer, but this is what I came up with. It's not that tight and I'll rerecord it, but only if you guys think drums work in this song.
Let me know.
Also, anyone want to add more to this one? I hear some organ/string potential and maybe even some synth. Also, electric guitar in the drum-kit parts.
Thoughts?
Also, I plan on putting up a new, more straight forward track soon for us to fool around with. That said, if any of you have something for the rest of us to work on, feel free to post it.
Okay, here's what I've got so far. I wanted to do some wordless vocal arrangements in the background, and I'll most likely have some time tonight. But in the meantime, wanted to prove that I haven't been just dicking around.
You glorious bastard! That sounds so fucking cool fuffle. Smart work, simple builds and then BAM take some organ mother-fucka! Nice little accent piece there at the end. Damn. I'm going to go listen to this about 10 more times. I'm going to record some parts on this tonight. I'm very inspired by your work. Thanks!!! I'll post your new version as another thread.
I have an idea for vocals in a few parts but nothing huge. You wanna take a crack at it?
Alright, I recorded some vocals that I'm not terribly thrilled with. There are parts I really enjoy, but others I don't. The lyrics are trite, but universal: https://soundcloud.com/thenewgreenmusic-com/foolish-with-tim...
It's not Hemingway, but then he never was much of a songwriter. What are your thoughts fuffle? Foolish with time
Careless with this heart of mine
Waking up
Getting to the point
where feet hitting the floor
Is not a chore anymore
I don't think so. I know that ecib was considering working on one of the tunes. I'm VERY excited for the harmony ideas, I intentionally left the middle of the song open. I was thinking a big bgood79 guitar solo could be cool. I hear a nice crunchy guitar part to come in with your organ. Take it instrumental for the most part till the end, what do you think?
Opening wine, heading downstairs to studio. Game on.
BPM: This song had the click set at 168, so that would be 84BPM. The new one that I called Half Empty is at 158 or 79bpm hope that helps: T-Dog, mrjasonetaylor, jonaswildman, fuffle, ecib, bgood79. Today I will work on putting drums on the most recent version of this track provided by mrjasonetaylor. Check it out if you've not already, he added some cool stuff. See the comment thread.
Dude, that's great. I was talking with bgood79 today and he mentioned that his recording setup isn't functional. He lives in the same town as you. What would you say to recording his guitar parts? You two met each other at the Detroit meet up recently.
I'm totally down with that. He probably knows his way around it better than I do :) I still have to run and grab an xlr cable; right now I'm plugging the guitar directly into the convertor, which sounds fine, but some people prefer to mic their amps. Bgood79, let me know if you want me to swing by with my laptop and this guy: http://www.lexiconpro.com/en-US/products/i-o-22
Great attempt Steve! I wish I still had my kit. I actually recorded a few more parts to this song, nothing major - a synth solo and some other accompaniment (although i wasn't thrilled with the total outcome). I can post that soon..
Yes, post it and I can re-record the drums to your version. Actually, if you could post it today, that'd be great. I'm home with a sick child and will likely have some time to play. If not, no big deal.
Here it is: https://soundcloud.com/jasonelliotttaylor/2b
First sound: Ooooh, I like it. Piano: Hell yeah! It's perfect. bgood79, have you fixed your damned computer yet? This song needs some electric guitar!
Thanks. Listening back to the piano parts aren't so bad I guess. After I recorded them I totally hated them which led to not uploading the version right away. Sorry for the delay. BTW - I think your drum parts are worth redoing if you can lock-down the tempo.
I'll give it a try, but I'm really not a drummer. Glad you think it works.
I'm struggling figuring out something for this song- not because it's not good (because it is), but because my brain works too simply for these changes. Everything I was coming up with was just overlaying chords, which is lazy and extraneous. I personally cotton to the idea of more straight-forward tracks, esp. given limited time to work on them for at least the frame of the near future. The drums are a little bit behind the beat... but recorded beautifully. Jesus. Great tone. In the future, would it be possible for whoever puts something up to include the BPM as well, so we can sync it to click track in whatever programs we use? Would make recording percussion stuff in general a lot easier.
I agree, posting The bpm would definitely help me a lot going forward. Percussion stuff and specifically rhythmic electronic stuff has been difficult for me to put together without a tempo. The two songs so far didn't sound to me like they were recorded to a metronome, actually. Which I wouldn't normally be opposed to, but considering the way we're recording I think it would help us out.
I agree as well. It would be great to line up a four count metronome to record to. This song sits somewhere around 84bpm.
I recorded it to a click so it has the bpm listed, I just need to look. Will do!
Maybe what it needs is chordal. Give it a whirl and post what you come up with. We can always decide whether it works or not. Also, what about vocals?
That would be great, I'm excited to hear your tune and I'd be glad to work on it.
Thanks man. Yeah, it's off in a number of places and if the consensus is that the "parts" work I'll give it another pass. Thanks for listening veen, I appreciate the feedback.
Steve, I would possibly change the cymbal hits from every 3 seconds to 6 (so skip a time) or maybe not have them at all. I focused on them and I think my focus indicates they shouldn't be there, who knows. I tried a similar drum beat a few times and kept going back to a straight forward beat that let the music stand out, rather than the drums trying to help the music stand out/ have dynamics (if this makes sense). I like the kick drum at the 1:08 mark (especially with the shaker accompanying it).
I hear ya on the cymbals. I think not having them at all might be a good thing. Thanks Jonas! Edit: As for the drums leading the song, I'm not under the impression that the song is "done". Therefore, my hope is that the next parts are able to make the drums seem justified, if that makes sense.
