'It's transcended that type of critique.' -I disagree. I think there are two entites at play here. One is the cultural phenomena (http://tinyurl.com/c3ylbgg) of LotR. The other is the book itself, which is made of words, so one could judge it, for lack of a better word, aesthetically (http://tinyurl.com/anhqmm).
It's certainly an old and influential book and here I agree with you. It doesn't need good reviews anymore, it's beyond that. However, the book is still there, for anyone to take shot at it.
