I never played the game Lemmings much, but this article brought it to mind. People stumble around the web, and the winning strategy is to funnel them into a place where you can keep them long enough to sell them something before the wander off again.
The goal of the web is to capture people long enough to sell them products. You get a commission for doing that. Web apps typically start as products, then convert into product-selling schemes, or become a tool in a product-selling scheme, like Rockmelt will.
