This is a very interesting perspective. The idea of 'disrupting' a la Airbnb has always seemed superficial to me, and reading this, I realized the shadow costs have a lot to do with it. If I am in a situation where it is advantageous to rent out my room or car, then I have fallen a couple of rungs from my parent's generation.

Even so, although boutique coffee shops might go under left and right, there maybe be room for some middle tier businesses like micro-brews, where local provides some advantage, but I can't think of a number of examples.
