There are too many deer. There are too many deer. There are too many deer. I do not hunt. Do not want to hunt. Do not own firearm. But I do want the deer population drastically reduced. On the South Fork of Long Island there are so many deer that they are being selected for smaller size. There is not enough food, not enough front and back yards to feed them. And yet there are well meaning but ecologically illiterate people who actually feed the deer. People erect 12' fences to keep them out so they feed next door. Deer are like giant grasshoppers or rabbits and require many pounds of low nutrition vegetation to stay alive and reproduce. The only ( that is "the only!") way to control them is to kill them. Many "animal lovers", it seems, would rather have the deer starve to death than reduce the populations as the deer destroy the very habitat they need to sustain themselves . Fifty years ago when I took biology at Cornell there were too many deer. People trying to raise trees had to fence the trees in and the deer out. That was fifty years ago. More hunters, more mountain lions and more wolves are the solution. Will that work In eastern Suffolk County as an example? Just drive out to Sag Harbor and check out the woods on North Haven. One should not be able to look through the woods. All the understory vegetation is gone. The problem is people who do not want to reduce deer populations to sustainable levels.
